About the event
Jonny is one of the most in demand trumpet players on the UK jazz scene today. He is an extraordinary and adventurous musician with a truly unique identity who draws from jazz funk and Latin. He is fluent in the whole history of jazz trumpet. He has worked as both a soloist and lead player in a variety of musical contexts, including session work, TV and radio, also playing lead trumpet in a Harry James style with The Bruce/Illett Big Band, which headlined the Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival for several years running! Jonny has received much musical acclaim for his fiery trumpet work. He plays all styles from Louis Armstrong to Freddie Hubbard and is a featured soloist with The Moscow Drug Club and plays with Brass Junkies and The Dockside Latin Orchestra. He has performed at venues and festivals across the world alongside great artists such as Bobby Shew, Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, and Kellis to name but a few. He is the musical director of the Bristol Community Big Band, and his trumpet was featured on the BBC drama series The Outlaws.
Tonight he is joined by the incredible Tom Berge on Hammond organ, Greg Sterland on tenor sax, and the mesmerising and totally individual Alex Goodyear on drums.
Get ready for a Blue Note style set, including tunes from Horace Silver and Stan Getz with sprinkles of Latin and Swing.
‘Trumpeter Jonny Bruce’s growls, wails and slurs wouldn’t have been out of place in the 1920’s Ellington band. – The Guardian
